ਬੂਝਤ ਦੀਪਕ ਮਿਲਤ ਤਿਲਤ ॥

As the dying lamp, burns up by getting oil.

ਕਾਇਆ ਆਰਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੀ ॥

The body is the furnace, and the mind is the iron within it; the five fires are burning in it.

ਕੋਇਲੇ ਪਾਪ ਪੜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਜਲਿਆ ਸੰਨੀ੍ ਚਿੰਤ ਭਈ ॥

Sins are the charcoal placed thereon by which the mind is burnt and anxiety becomes the tong.

ਮੇਰੀ ਪਟੀਆ ਲਿਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥

Upon my writing tablet write down only the Name of God, the Lord of the Universe.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਦੁਇ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਸੋਲੇ ਗੋਡਹੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਭਾਈ ॥

O brother make both lust and anger thy hand-hoes and there with them loosen thy farm.

ਚਾਕੀ ਚਾਟਹਿ ਚੂਨੁ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ ਚਾਕੀ ਕਾ ਚੀਥਰਾ ਕਹਾਂ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

You lick the quern, and eat the flour. Where have you taking the quern cleaning rag?

ਰਥਿ ਫਿਰੰਦੈ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਥਾਵ ॥

So are the chariots, which are seen moving about in various places.

ਜੈਸੇ ਹਰਹਟ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਟਿੰਡ ਲਗਤ ਹੈ ਇਕ ਸਖਨੀ ਹੋਰ ਫੇਰ ਭਰੀਅਤ ਹੈ ॥

Just as the bucket on the chain of the persian-wheel rotate, emptying one and filling up the another.

ਪਾਇ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗਾਫਲਿ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਹਾਥਿ ॥

Thus, the ignorant man has struck his foot with an axe by his own hand.
