ਨਾਮੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਾ ਰਖੁ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਵੇਸੁ ॥

Let the Lord's Name be the seed, contentment the earth-crusher, and wear garb of humility.

ਗਰੀਬੀ ਗਦਾ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥ ਖੰਨਾ ਸਗਲ ਰੇਨੁ ਛਾਰੀ ॥

Humility is my spiked-club. My double-edged sword [Khanda] is to be the dust of feet.

ਮਨੂਰੈ ਤੇ ਕੰਚਨ ਭਏ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

O brother, from rusted iron I have been transformed into gold, by uniting in the union of Guru, the philosopher's stone.

ਖੰਨਲੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਉਜਲੀ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣਿ ਪਾਹੁ ॥

The oily-rag of oilman cannot be cleaned by merely washing it, even if it is washed hundred times.

ਖਾਟ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਚਉਪਾਈ ॥ ਸਿਰਹਾਨਾ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਲਾਈ ॥ ਊਪਰ ਕਉ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਖੀਂਧਾ ।। ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਥੀਂਦਾ ।।

I ask for a four-legged cot, a pillow and mattress. I ask for a quilt to cover myself. Your humble servant shall perform Your devotional worship service with love.

ਪਾੜ ਪੜੋਸਣਿ ਪੂਛਿ ਲੇ ਨਾਮਾ ਕਾ ਪਹਿ ਛਾਨਿ ਛਵਾਈ ਹੋ ॥ ਤੋ ਪਹਿ ਦੁਗਣੀ ਮਜੂਰੀ ਦੈਹਉ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਬੇਢੀ ਦੇਹੁ ਬਤਾਈ ਹੋ ॥1॥

The neighboring woman asked Naam Dev, "Who built your cottage? I shall pay him double wages. Tell me, who is your cottage builder?"

ਜਉ ਤੁਮ ਦੀਵਰਾ ਤਉ ਹਮ ਬਾਤੀ ॥

If You are the lamp, then I am the wick.

ਆਰ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਹ ਤੋਪਉ ॥ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਂਬੀ ਠਾਉ ਰੋਪਉ ॥

I have no awl to stitch them; I have no knife to patch them.

ਉਧਰੁ ਦੇਹ ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਚਰਣੀ ॥

Save me lift my body up out of the deep blind well [of the world], and allow me to to sit in Your pious feet.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮੋਹ ਕੂਪਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥

You have fallen into the dark deep well of lust, anger and emotional attachment.
